Celebrate July as Michigan Craft Beer Month in Sault Ste. Marie

Posted on July 19th, 2019

It’s time to celebrate! July is Michigan Craft Beer Month in the Mitten State thanks to a bill recently passed in Lansing.

The declaration comes in recognition of Michigan’s contributions to the craft beer industry and the impact on the state’s agricultural and tourism industries. With over 350 breweries across both peninsulas, Michigan has the fourth most breweries nationally.

One does not have to hop far in Sault Ste. Marie to find a watering hole where you can enjoy a locally brewed blast of fresh flavors. Along Portage Avenue, a 21-and-over adult can find three made-in-Sault Ste. Marie breweries. In addition, a bevy of establishments can pour you a glass from some of the state’s craft beer staples.

Soo Brewing Company is the one that started it all in Michigan’s first city. Opened in 2011, with pews for seating, a front row look at the brewing process and a gorgeous view of downtown Sault Ste. Marie, Soo Brewing Company is a must-stop for all craft brewery aficionados.

Located in a building that encapsulates Sault Ste. Marie’s aesthetic, Karl’s Cuisine boat shaped restaurant, Superior Coast Winery & Brewing brings beer and wine that pairs perfectly with Karl’s fresh and original cuisine.

Near the Farmers’ Market square, 1668 Winery & Lockside Brewery also pairs brews, wines and fresh food. With beer created on the spot, 1668 Winery & Lockside Brewery works as a hub for art, conversations and a taste of downtown Soo.

Looking to enjoy an ice cold one from some of the larger microbrews in the state? No worries, plenty of establishments in the Soo have you covered.

Bird’s Eye Outfitters, Moloney’s Alley and Wicked Sister are among a handful of bars in the Soo with wide selections ranging from some of the largest microbreweries in the state (and country!) to hidden Upper Peninsula gems on tap. In addition, most establishments along the BARmuda Triangle also tend to carry a few Michigan-made brews on tap or in bottles and cans.
