As a person in my 20s, I can appreciate a good adventure. Sightseeing is one of my favorite things to do in my spare time. Michigan, especially the Upper Peninsula, is the perfect place to go on a sightseeing adventure! One of my favorite places to visit is Point Iroquois Lighthouse in Brimley. It is just a 30-minute drive from Sault Ste. Marie, so it makes for a perfect afternoon trip, especially if I’m short on time. Plus, there is a lot to do when out at Point Iroquois Lighthouse.

If you are interested in learning about some history, head inside to the museum. Stories of the lightkeepers and their families are part of the roots of the lighthouse and are showcased in the museum. When you exit the museum, there are signs posted around the grounds to give you even more information about history. I personally love to learn about the places I visit and there are plenty of opportunities for that around the lighthouse. Fun fact! Point Iroquois Lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, so there is a lotto learn about while visiting.

Another part of Point Iroquois Lighthouse that I love is the view. Sitting on the beach will give you a great view of Lake Superior and Canada. But if you head up the 72 steps to the top of the lighthouse, that view gets even better. You can see for miles in either direction. If you enjoy freighter watching, you can even see them as they make their passage through Whitefish Bay and go off on their journey through Lake Superior, or as they head towards the St. Marys River.

If you love taking pictures like me, Point Iroquois Lighthouse is a great spot for you! Between the beach, woods and lighthouse, there are plenty of places to get that amazing shot! If you love a good sunset picture, this is also a great place to place to watch it set. Sit on the beach, relax and wait for the perfect shot!

But what is a trip to Lake Superior if you don’t take a swim in the cool, refreshing water? I personally have to take a dive in Lake Superior at least once every summer and this is the perfect place! After you have finished looking around the museum, head down to the beach and go for a swim. You may even find an agate while you’re out there!
Although I may be younger, Point Iroquois Lighthouse is perfect for all ages! If you have been out to the lighthouse be sure to share your pictures and stories with #ilovethesoo on your social media.
