We are well into the winter season in Sault Ste. Marie, and you know what that means…the Sault Seal Recreation Area is opening soon! A popular place for all ages, you will often find entire families having the time of their lives enjoying the recreation area in at least one of these five ways.

The opening day of the Sault Seal Recreation Area, or Minneapolis Hill, as the locals call it (named by the nearby road,) is a much-anticipated marker in the winter timeline in Sault Ste. Marie. It is also the site of multiple ways to have fun during the brisk and snow-blessed days of winter. Reserve the park for a group event such as a birthday celebration or family reunion! 1. Seven Tubing Runs

Fun at the Sault Seal Recreation Area starts with tubing! The recreation area houses a total of seven tubing runs, making it easy to enjoy with any level of winter tuber. Tubes are provided for this side of the facility with the lifts, so you can save all of your energy for the laughs and screams as you fly down the groomed hills.

2. Skiing and Snowboarding

The Sault Seal Recreation Area also provides the opportunity for the popular winter staple of skiing and snowboarding. There is a particular area for skiing and snowboarding next to the groomed tubing hills where can carve away at the fresh powder. Another perk is that this spot is equipped with a lift, so you don’t have to worry about getting up the hill.

3. Sledding Hill

Next to the groomed hills, there is also a section of the slope for complimentary sledding! This area is excellent for everyone to enjoy. You will have to bring your sled and leg power to get back to the top, but the exhilaration and memories are worth it!

4. Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing

Speeding down a hill not your thing? Strap on your snowshoes or cross-country skis and explore the Lynn Trail System located across the parking lot from the chalet. Didn’t bring your gear? No problem! Lake Superior State University’s Regional Outdoor Center provides gear rental for activities. For more information on what equipment is available, click here.

5. Heated Chalet

After Jack Frost has been nipping at your nose and toes all day, there is a little piece of heaven that you can escape to warm up. The heated chalet on-site is the ideal place to take a break and still watch all of the action on the hill through giant windows that face the tubing hill. It is also the ideal place to have your pizza delivered so you can refuel the group for another round of fun in the snow.
