How to lock through- Decide which lock you are going to use. The Corps of Engineers would prefer that recreational boats use the Canadian Lock, but you may use the U.S. Lock if you choose. The Canadian Lock is smaller, less intimidating, and will provide you with a faster transit. The Canadian Lock is open from 11:30 AM to 7:30 PM to start and then goes to 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM on June 22. The U.S. Locks are open 24 hours. There is no charge for either lock, and there is no customs involvement if you intend to simply pass through the Canadian Lock. Both locks monitor VHF channel 14. Simply contact them on the radio and they will instruct you what to do. Call “Canadian Canal” or ” American Lockmaster”, depending on which you have selected. If you wish to lock through so you can say that you have, I recommend locking up through the Canadian Lock and down through the U.S. Lock.
