Fresh Local Foods … Original Art … Live Music

Wednesday evenings from early spring through late fall, fresh-food lovers flock to historic down-town Sault Ste. Marie for local food, original art, live music and the friendliest folks around. From 5:15 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., families bring their home-grown and home-crafted wares to the local Farmers’ Market, a gathering that’s become a mid-week festival.
In 2003 local food producers Mark Blackwood and Cindy and John Dutcher formed the Farmers' Market so that everyone could buy fresh homegrown food. From these humble beginnings, the market has expanded to more than 40 families who offer a variety of goods from produce, inspected meats, eggs, bread, plants, honey and maple syrup to one-of-a-kind art objects.

"This market is about forming relationships with the people who grow your food,” says Market Master Jim Lucas. “Customers can ask specific questions about how the food was grown. And once they’ve tasted a vine-ripened local tomato or sweet cherry just off the tree, they come back for more. This is food security for the seller and the consumer".
In the summer of 2008, the Market will move from the current location near the corner of Ashmun and Maple Streets to a larger site built specifically for the Market at the corner of Portage Avenue and Ashmun Street, the cross-roads of historic downtown and the tourist and museum districts. At the new location, the Market will be open on Saturday mornings as well as Wednesday evenings.
