Sault Ste. Marie Opens it's Streets to Snowmobilers

SAULT STE MARIE – We’ve rolled out the white carpet for snowmobiles in Sault Ste. Marie, where automobiles now share city streets with winter’s most exciting mode of transportation with easy access to the trails. Here are your current trail conditions.
The “Soo” has always been identified with snowmobiling, thanks largely to its status as home to the International 500 endurance race. Our community is surrounded by a system of trails groomed by the Sault Snowmobile Association and local businesses put out the welcome mats every winter for another active snowmobiling season.
Opening city streets is regarded by many as the ultimate invitation to the snowmobile enthusiasts seeking the right combination of city lodging, restaurants and entertainment near wooded, well-groomed trails connected to the city by a tunnel beneath I-75.

“After coming off the trails, visitors can drive directly to their motel or hit a local restaurant or pick up supplies at a store. With the opening of city streets, they can access virtually every location by snowmobile,” explained Linda Hoath, Executive Director of the Sault Convention & Visitors Bureau.
The new ordinance does outline some restrictions. Some of the city’s busiest thoroughfares are off-limits, but secondary streets and alleys should eliminate any need for those streets. Restricted streets include M-129, I-75, the I-75 Business Spur, and the hill on Easterday Avenue. Boundary streets surrounding War Memorial Hospital are also off-limits to sleds.
All snowmobilers below the age of 18 must carry a state-issued safety training certificate. Any driver below the age of 16 must be under the direct supervision of an adult. In the interest of city residents, a curfew is also in place. Between the hours of 1 a.m. and 6 a.m., snowmobile operation is prohibited within the city limits.
