The Place Where Michigan Was Born

Fun Thing to do in "The Soo at LSSU"

. anchor_LSSU_under_72_color.jpgLake Superior State University offers more than 60 undergraduate programs of study. Its “hands on,” academically rigorous training with a wide assortment of study options is distinctive, and its small size ensures that students receive personal attention and ample opportunity to interact with a dedicated teaching faculty

The university is located on the grounds of former Fort Brady. The fort started out on the banks of the St. Mary's River and moved up to higher ground overlooking the Soo Locks in 1893. The Army declared the fort as surplus and deeded it to the State of Michigan in 1946 to establish a branch of Michigan College of Mining and Technology. The Sault Branch became autonomous in 1970 as Lake Superior State College and became Lake Superior State University in 1987.
