While the Soo Locks have fascinated visitors for over a century and a half, our history stretches long and rich before that. The singing/songwriting duo of Dave Stanaway and Susan Askwith bring it all to life with great music and tales of adventure and intrigue. At the Johnston House in the Sault's Historic Water Street District, performances last about an hour beginning at 1:00 every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon through the end of August. The setting is rustic and intimate amid actual artifacts of the fur trade era. The music is sometimes lilting and fun, sometimes powerful and strong. Songs tell of maple sugar and shipwrecks, of Native ways and stormy seas, of men and women who worked in and loved this land. The stories are true and the feelings are real.
Chippewa County Historical Society sponsors Dave and Susan, and staffs the historic homes with excellent docents. Immediately following each musical performance is a brief re-enactment of John Johnston, the independent fur trader whose home, in part, is the venue. It is located at 405 E. Water Street between the U.S. Coast Guard base and the marina, and at the foot of the rapids that once raged and foamed on the shore. We'd love to have you come and join us. There is no fee, but donations are gratefully accepted.
